The year was 1997, I wanted to move to San Francisco. I wanted to pursue a career in CGI, go to tech school out there, learn the 3D Ray Max and Maya.
I looked at the housing and figured, I'll take a ferry from Alameda to San Francisco. It will be a laid back commute. I was looking at apartments on rent.com. Anyhow I decided against living out West and finally settled in NYC.

Manual is so much more fun. On hills, use the handbrake!

I'm getting such a kick out of your posts right now - discovering San Francisco/Bay Area.

I moved to SF in '96, and went through the same thing driving a manual transmission in the City. You'll be fine, practice makes perfect. But avoid the uphill parallel parking spaces. Not good for the beginner. :-)

Looking forward to meeting you in June. You guys will be Bay Area experts by then. :-)

Okay, first of all, you are really building this driving thing all out of proportion. Just breathe and shift!!
Secondly, that food looks amazing--I just had a lousy tuna pocket from D'Angelo's and the lettuce was brown and wilted. So that plate of food was making my mouth water!! Yum...

Welcome to northern California! I never did learn how to drive a stick. I still don't see the allure. Automatic transmissions are beautiful... you just press on the gas and go. Good luck in the apt. search. Berkeley is much flatter and mellower than S.F. You might even find a place with a little yard for a garden!

Moving is always weird, it takes time to get used to stuff... and tose crazy californians! Eating veggies! What is that? Is this america or what?

I say, ditch the car. You don't need it. I sold my car before I moved here 9 years ago...I live in SF and commute to Berkeley for work. It's a cinch. http://511.org gives you the full scoop on Bay Area mass transit. Come over to the office when you get a chance. --Connie at Peachpit Press

I believe in you two. I know you will make out okay there. Everything will fall into place. You just seemed charmed somehow.

what the heck do you need a car for?! I drove a scooter when I lived there and loved it! you can always find a parking space...

if you move to berkeley, live near the berkeley bowl. the produce will make you die. there's nothing like it in nyc. whole foods is just suggestive of good produce compared to there. UGH! I'm jealous!

so. yeah. buy a helmet regardless.

I'm jealous that you know how to drive at all. I'm going to end up moving to a city where you can't live without a car and I'm going to have to be chaufferred around like some kind of 1950's housewife for however long it takes for me to learn how!

...and is it just me or does that salad truly look different than a New York City salad? Seriously? Are the vegetables in California brighter? Your salad is glowing.

Ryanne. Hills can be a good thing when you're driving standard.

I grew up on one of the steepest hills in the City and my father wouldn't let me get a license until I could parallel park on the hill. I got VERY good at driving a stick shift around SF in the 1950s/60s. Unfortunately, I have lost my edge and now I even get nervous in an automatic on the hills that I know (and love) so much.

The neat thing about SF is that if you are driving up a hill, your chances of encountering a stop sign at the top of it are great. It was always great fun for us to sit in the window and watch tourists try to drive up Leavenworth St. and deal with the stop sign at the top.

what can I say? You get your jollies where you can in SF.

Welcome to my state. (But check Alameda or Berkeley for places to stay--can't beat that ferry boat commute!)

Welcome to San Francisco! I moved here 2 years ago, and although I kept my car, I only use it once or twice a week. It's usually easier to get around without it. My girlfriend has lived here 12 years with no car.

Good luck on looking for a new place. You probably already know, but the best resource for finding anything out here is Craig's List

Oh, I forgot to mention... sorry about the rain. It's really not like this all the time. We've had a strange run of weather.

I'm glad you're in San Fran!!!!! Huray!!!!

Don't worry about learing how to drive a stick car, its pretty esy, you just need a few lessons and that's it.

We went to San Fran one week ago, we stayed with some friends who live in Berkley!!!!!

oh my god - i totally hear you! when i tried to move to s.f. in '97 I had just learned hot to drive standard (and my previous experience had been to put one in a ditch quite quickly!) - anyway, my friend let me have her truck while i was there and not only was it a stick, but the driver's seat back wouldn't stay up so everytime i went up a hill i fell backwards...anyway - good luck to you, I'm sure you'll get the hang of it.
