these apartments have no insulation at all. you pull up the floor and there is about a foot gap of space before the other person's ceiling begins. this means our neighbor can hear every fucking movement you make. and he really don't like it. so we are pulling the floor up to start soundproofing. always something to learn around here.

WTF? Neither your landlord nor your neighbor feels the need to help out with this? Jeez.
thats so cool that yoy guys are able to do that stuff yourselves. it's like "weekend projects with Jay and Ryanne."
I remember that neighbor. He seemed nice, but reminded me of one of my good friends who is super sensitive to sound. If I remember right, he even got mad when your cats run around. You guys are so compassionate - responding by doing a lot of work to help soundproof, rather than assuming he's off his nut. You good people! (waves to White Baby)
the neighbor is going to help pull up the floor and also pay for the materials. i'm glad to do it, because it's cause for a new floor rather than crappy carpet. so it's all good!
Wow, looking forward to see how you do this. My old flat had similar problems with the neighbour complaining. No soundproofing whatsoever. There's genius to the way you and Jay dive in and get things done.

Wow, that is one horrible floor. I can see it lacks insulation and your neighbors drywall looks like it is attached directly to the beams. This equals direct transfer all noise to your neighbor. If you have not already picked out the materials you might want to use of a layer of Green Glue or Quiet Wood. It will help reduce the vibration. You can also lay down a layer of foam back MLV or cork. Then on top of that carpeting with thick padding.
