Hangin with Parasher
After we presented at the University (see that video at Momentshowing), we hung out with Parasher and he showed us around Mumbai. Mumbai is huge and filled with people and traffic and food and sounds. I generally dislike shooting out a car window, feels lazy to me, but man, the stuff you see out the car window in India is unlike anything else. I also like to see what TV is like in other places. Equally as bright and flashy, but so different. Well, except for all the American programming that gets played. And Cricket! Cricket is nuts.
p.s. while i'm fully enjoying my time in Dharamsala at the Air Jaldi conference, something that is pissing me off is, as usual, there are all men speakers and panelists. WTF! Here I am half way around the world and I'm at a fucking boys club tech conference again. I guess it's the same everywhere. See the Schedule HERE, help me find the women, because i'm only seeing like 2.

The video out of the window was great, looks like it was pretty crazy there though. I would hate to be in rush hour like he said.

thanks for your video, india it's becoming very interesting and not why girls on tv are wonderful, but this place it's amazing, can be really quiet and so confused
Hey Ryanne, I am really enjoying these videos. It is amazing to be able to experience this culture through they eyes of you and Jay.
It is interesting to hear your perspective on the lack of women involved. I don't know why there are not many women involved in conference as you'd like to see. If the reason for this lack of involvement by women is oppresion, or predjudice I think it is a problem worth speaking out about.
May I ask, have you heard of India's caste system? Have you heard of the people called the Dalits. I hear they make up about 25% of the population and are considered to be an untouchable, dirty and contaminated people because of the caste they were born into. I wonder what if anything you have seen, heard or learned about this and if you could share it at some point during your trip. I'd love to learn more from someone who is actually there. I can't imagine what it would be like to be oppressed as I have heard the Dalit women and men are.

Horn okay please? Okay. Wow, massive amounts of stuff people noise and movement. I wonder what the air quality is like...And the worm thing is truly yucky and a little unnerving!.... I wonder why so few women at the conference? So much the better that YOU are there. Say, are you homesick yet? Hang in.

I know I really don't need to tell you this: Since there are not enough women speaking at Tech conferences, then YOU should be speaking at Tech conferences.
But I also understand why you don't; it's because they are BOOOOORRRRING.

Yes! Ryan! I had the exact same reaction! About 8 girls in the entire event. On the other hand for the workshops we had Elektra and Laura teaching which bumped up the stats. Elektra was soo awesome, i have never met a woman like her, she lives in a caravan, that is solar powered, she uses wifi to communcate, she is a physicist, a ham radio expert, a hacktivist and she created code - B.A.T.M.A.N-III 0.1-rc1 mesh routing daemon - to make a mesh network more efficient. And she is able to speak to lay persons like myself! AMAAAAZING WOMAN!
