Products

Here we go again. Another Jay and Ryanne conversation while traveling. We've been talking about this idea for a while and I'd really love for us to help it become a reality.

That's serious stuff your talking there. I;m with you, with how easy it is today to make put video on the internet, it would be great to know about these small companies that don't have the big budgets of larger ones, to know about their products. That's a great idea.

But I don't see a "big company" doing so, like, showing all their secrets, or even the "horrors" they hide behind those expensive advertising campaigns.

Anyway, it's a great idea.

Somebody is doing something similar to what you are talking about through words and pictures, but it's a service product. This guy and his wife are opening a small independent movie theater in Springfield, MO. He has been detailing the entire process of getting it open at:
http://blog.moxiecinema.com/
He touches on things you mention, like pricing. He explains what sort of costs are associated with the business and you can get an idea of why he has to charge X amount of money for tickets and Y amount of money for concessions.

My wife and I talk about this often and have made a conscious choice to buy mostly organic veggies when we can and try to find out where our food and other products come from. We are also into the intention community idea, but with some reservations.

I am glad others are thinking about this stuff too.

good idea...how about this: somehow work with people to provide 'how to' or 'demo' videos etc to accompany certain wikipedia entries? The same 'grass roots' approach to the knowlege there could be used to provide videos of all kinds of things.

I agree, it's an excellent idea. You've seriously got me thinking here. The wheels are definitely turning.

Concious consumerism is NOT a new idea it's a movement. please read, get some chomsky, or lesig, or moore or schlosser etc etc etc. It's not that difficult to get information about the way things are made. However, if you'd like to further the topic by vlogging, do some research and by all means become an activist for change. Make advertisements for FREE....for small companies. This will do a world of good for the small concious business sector...and for the world at large. If you're possing this as a way to make money for yourself, then give the work to people who are unemployeed, underpaid, an unprovided for. Live conciously. Make poverty history.

Ryanne,

Sadly, Stonyfield was bought by Danone of France (you know of Dannon yogurt? Its a really big company. There was an article in the food cooperative newsletter I receive and the owners sold the business in an agreement they would be able to maintain some product consciousness for a contracted period of time. Hopefully Danone see's the benefit of this type of product and production for healthy foods.

Great comments from others!

I'm with you guys. I've been thinking about this for a long time too. I'd like to have smaller/indie/local/organic/good-for-you companies and organizations have the same rep as larger ones - and not be limited by their marketing budget. Most of the time we (consumer) end up paying for marketing and packaging...and not the actual product. Same goes for a lot of things... this is where we come into play...

PS - Amsterdam looks amazing. Looks like it's so peaceful.

nice vid! lovely city.
this is on my radar too.

you mentioned yogurt (i didn't realize stonyfielf was bought by dannon?!) - there's a little yogurt company in Wisconsin and they sell in co-ops. the lady with free samples at our co-op said sometimes she makes the yogurt.

so of course i'm like - BING! - Minnesota Story right there. in fact all along i've been wanting to focus on food, where it comes from. from the cow or the field to my stomach. and heck let's go all the way to the sewage treatment plant and the river, or wherever. like, how the fuck do things work? we can show it!

it would be cool if these little companies vlogged, and some of them will. but we can do it for them, too.

absolutely right on! People should feel more connected to the products they buy, in a "whole" way, instead of just as a reaction to advertisements and status and etc. ---and realize who all the people and what all the energy resources are connected to that. Even a piece of fruit, it's amazing all the people that it took to get that piece of fruit to us. And right now we are well past the half way mark of using up the world's oil supply, so we are going to have to start making more informed decisions about consuming in its entirety. What a lovely place for a great conversation! Now jump in the water! :)
